Is Laser Dentistry Safe?

We would never put the safety of our patients at risk. The laser technology and procedures that we use are FDA approved, and are only handled by professionals.  Lasers have actually been used in dental procedures dating back to around 1994, and advances in technology and regulation have only made the use of lasers safer and more efficient.

What Dental Procedures Are Lasers Used For?

Dental lasers have a wide range of uses due to their ability to target very precise areas, and at Columbia Family Dentist, we mainly use lasers for procedures that involve working with the soft tissues like your gums, cheeks, and tongue, or hard tissue like tooth enamel.

The laser can shape and remove soft tissue for procedures like exposing wisdom teeth that are partially erupted or removing enflamed or infected tissue.  It can also remove decay that has developed within your tooth, or shape the enamel in preparation for another procedure, such as getting a filling.  Additionally, lasers can obtain small tissue samples for biopsy procedures, helping our dentist detect lesions or potential tumors in the mouth.

What Are The Advantages To Laser Dentistry?

Lasers can control the amount of bleeding during treatment and can sometimes remove gum tissue without causing bleeding at all. There also may be less swelling and pain following the surgery, since the laser can seal off blood vessels and nerve endings. Depending on the procedure, using laser treatment can make anesthesia unnecessary, making for a more relaxed and anxiety free appointment.
