Preventing Childhood Cavities

At Columbia Family Dentist, we love being able to take care of your entire family. We want every child who visits our Columbia, MD office to be excited to visit our practice. This helps instill the importance of going to the dentist regularly and will create good oral hygiene habits early! The first step in caring for your child’s teeth is educating yourself and your child about oral hygiene. If they feel comfortable visiting the dentist, preventing cavities will be much easier!

Oral Hygiene Maintenance

Teach your child good oral hygiene as soon as possible to prevent cavities from forming! For infants, use a wet gauze, clean washcloth, or toothbrush to wipe bacteria from gums and emerging baby teeth after each feeding. As your child ages, he should eat a balanced diet low in sugary snacks. Develop a brushing and flossing routine and see your pediatric dentist regularly. Cavities often form because of:

  • Not brushing teeth before bed
  • Going to bed with a bottle
  • Eating or drinking before bedtime
  • Frequent snacking or sipping milk, juice, and other sugary drinks
  • Consuming candy multiple times a day
  • Gummy vitamins and fruit snacks

Brushing

Brushing is the first fight against cavities! Bad breath and other dental conditions can also be avoided by a good brushing regimen. Make sure your child uses a soft-bristled toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste.

Flossing

Children should floss daily before they go to bed. Flossing helps get rid of built-up plaque where toothbrushes cannot reach. This plaque is between the teeth and needs to be removed before it builds up. The first time a child flosses, it is likely the gums will bleed. This is normal! The bleeding should stop once they consistently floss. If not, contact our Columbia dentists.

Routine Visits To Your Columbia Dentist

Setting up an appointment every six months for a checkup and cleaning will help prevent cavities. These checkups are proactive. They prevent long term oral health issues as well as build trust between your child and the dentist. We offer many other services at Columbia Family Dentist such as snoring treatment, sleep apnea treatment, teeth whitening, dental implants, dental crowns and more. We hope your child will develop a strong relationship with our dentists and staff that lasts into adulthood!
