Maintaining Whitened Teeth

As your Columbia, MD dentist, we proudly offer a variety of high-quality cosmetic dentistry services, including teeth whitening. While we take pride in our effective teeth whitening treatments, it’s important to note that simply undergoing this treatment isn’t enough on its own to maintain whitened teeth. Maintaining whitened teeth takes a dedicated commitment in your daily routine and by following these tips, you’ll be well on your way toward keeping your teeth looking white and healthy.

Tips For A Bright Smile From Your Columbia, MD Dentist

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

If you want to maintain whitened (and healthy) teeth, it’s important for you to practice good oral hygiene on a daily basis. This includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day (preferably after every meal) and making sure to floss daily as well. It’s also beneficial to use fluoride mouthwashes or other dental products that contain fluoride.

Don’t Use Tobacco

Not only is tobacco harmful for your body, but it’s harmful for your teeth as well. Whether you’re smoking or chewing tobacco, the usage of tobacco can stain your teeth with a yellow tinge and cause them to lose their whiteness.

Avoid Drinks that Stain Teeth

Like tobacco, many of the drinks you consume happen to stain your teeth. Coffee is one of the biggest culprits; drinking too much of it can stain your teeth yellow. It’s not just coffee though – plenty of other drinks cause staining, including sodas, sports drinks, and wine.

If you’re going to have one of these drinks though, we recommend consuming them with a straw so that the drink passes by your front teeth. Also, make sure not to savor the drink or swish it around in your mouth – this can cause staining too.

Use a Whitening Toothpaste

To keep your smile looking pearly white, it’s best to use a whitening toothpaste when brushing your teeth. Even if you actively avoid drinks that stain teeth, your daily eating habits will likely start to cause stains over time. Whitening toothpaste can remove these stains that have accumulated on your teeth. Make this your toothpaste of choice if whitening your teeth is your main priority.
